Texe Marrs: The fix is in — Jews rule America

Posted in Media Watch with tags , , , on April 29, 2009 by The 800 Pound Gorilla

pentagon-israelNo one understands the machinations and motives of the Jewish criminal network currently controlling our national governments and media institutions quite like Christian author and radio host Texe Marrs.

“They constitute a secret government behind the government,” Marrs says in one of his 2008 radio shows, explaining how the elders of Zion have used two devices — force and “make-believe” — to cement their control over the world. Through these means, he points out, “they have now gained control of the organs of American government, as well as the governments of Britain and France, among others.”

To download this highly informative audio file — in which Marrs drives home “the absolute, incontrovertible fact that Jews rule America” — READ MORE.

You don’t have to be especially religious to appreciate the information presented by Marrs, who, thanks to decades of tireless research, is an authority on critical issues seldom if ever discussed in the mainstream. These include the “Judaization” of the Christian church in America; the proliferation of occultic (more specifically, cabalistic) ritual and symbolism in the government and media; and, perhaps most importantly, the Jewish conspiracy — now in its latter stages — to usher in a totalitarian “New World Order.”

In this radio show from early 2008 (when the Bush Jr. administration was still in the White House), Marrs asks how Israel can exert such tremendous influence over US policymaking — despite the relatively small number of Jews in the US. “Jews only constitute about 2 to 2.5 percent of the American population; out of 320 million people, only about 7.5 million are Jews,” he says. “So it isn’t voting power they have.”

He then explains how prophetic writers George Orwell and Alduous Huxley “taught us that propaganda and ‘make-believe’ could be even more effective than brute force.” Marrs continues: “In the very first of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, the authors say — three times in a row — ‘Our countersign is force and make-believe.’ And that’s how they intend to take over the world.”

Marrs goes on to point out that over 70 percent of the members of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) — the influential “think-tank” that crafts US domestic and foreign policy — are Jews. “The CFR, which includes over 200 members of the George W. Bush administration, is a Zionist front,” he says, noting that CFR President Richard Haas, a Jew, was made a “special assistant” to Bush Sr. during the latter’s presidency.

Marrs also identifies numerous Zionist agents, whose primary allegiance is to the criminal state of Israel, within the Bush Jr. administration. These include Attorney-General Michael Mukasey, an orthodox Jew who advocates the use of torture and who was nominated for the post by Democratic New York Senator (and Jew) Charles Schumer; Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff, a Jewish citizen of both Israel and the US; Special Envoy for Human Rights Jay Lefkowitz, also a Jew; Chief-of-Staff Josh Bolton, a Jew, who, according to Time Magazine, would open cabinet meetings with a reading from the Talmud; and Jewish IRS chief Douglas Shulman.

Marrs goes even further, pointing out that Jewish organizations are behind the proliferation of abortion and the promotion of homosexuality in America:

“You can’t name a single evangelical Christian organization that promotes homosexuality and abortion,” he says. “But I can cite numerous Jewish organizations that openly favor abortion and promote homosexuality: the American Jewish Committee; the American Jewish Congress; B’nai Brith; the Central Conference of American Rabbis; the Federation of Reconstructionist Congregations; Hadasa, the Jewish women’s group; the Jewish Labor Committee; the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods; the National Council of Jewish Women; the New Jewish Agenda; the Rabbinical Assembly; the Union of American Hebrew Congregations; and the United Synagogues of America.”

Finally, Marrs points to the line-up of would-be US presidential hopefuls — all of them ardent Zionists — as proof of the Jewish stranglehold over the American electoral system.

“You can see their power when you look at candidates for president right now,” he says. “Virtually all of them are Israel-firsters: Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, and even Barack Obama, who, in a recent speech to AIPAC, declared: ‘Our support for Israel will not be compromised if I’m elected president.’”

A Cypto-jew and the Nazi underground movment “The Believer”

thebeliever_lRyan Gosling stars as Danny Balint, a Nazi youth whose influential way with words and speeches has earned him high regard amongst the underground movements in New York City. He has the ability to attract the right kind of attention to get where he wants to go; if Hitler had a reincarnation, this just might be it. But something else is troubling Danny, something rather unexpected: he himself happens to be of Jewish heritage. We see it not so much in words as we do in actions: during the breaking and entering into a synagogue by his neo-Nazi group, he is hesitant to destroy. When the time comes for him to prove himself by taking the life of a Jew, he backs down. Upon meeting Carla (Summer Phoenix), the daughter of a Fascist group leader (Theresa Russell), he does not try to dissuade her from learning the Hebrew language in order to read the Talmud.

somewhere near the end of the movie Danny is asked by his yeshiva childhood friends after stating their present occupations (Rabbi, Hebrew teacher, etc.) “What about you? What are you doing? Something strange, l bet. Uh,… No, it’s kind of an underground thing. Like an artist? No.Uh, like a private business.” indicating in my opinion that he was following the natural cores of his Talmudic teachings he received as a child. Even the scene opens with a Rabbi saying the line “The TaImud teaches us…”

Religious doubt leads to violence in this slice-of-lifer that won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival — now finally making tentative steps in general release.

Jewish self-hatred is an interesting foundation for a film, if only because it’s a subject never explored by an industry still apologizing for the Holocaust. The lengths to which someone will go to redefine and prove themselves a member of the enemy circle are certainly compelling. But when the main character in question dives between extremes without a single clear definition of his motives, the strength of the narrative suffers. A double life can only work when you are aware of some of the triggers that push some semblance of reality into the character in question.

Danny’s (Ryan Gosling) Jewish schooling has apparently left him with so many doubts, that the only cure for his intellectual suffering is the impenetrable wish to kill them all. Jews run and own everything anyway, so this will be a popular new sport to reset society, right? Finish what Hitler started!

Danny is encouraged along this bastardly streak by a Fascist circle he easily, miraculously even, finds on the Internet, headed by Curtis (Billy Zane, Titanic) and Lina (Theresa Russell, Black Widow). These two folks don’t have the passionate quality that Danny has when he speaks, even though they have the intellectual capacity to back themselves in a fight, which Danny can’t. With each prank Danny pulls, they edge him towards public speaking for fundraising, while their daughter Carla (Summer Phoenix) finds ways to uncover Danny’s Judaism and sleep with him.

Danny’s brutality is acceptable because that is how we first see him. His mindset is a little hard to swallow, because an intelligent 26-year old could definitely find better pursuits, even when approaching his internal boiling point. His struggle as he is received farther into the Nazi underworld is nicely portrayed with poignant undertones. Danny’s internal battle is compulsively watchable once these theorems are digested, like taking a geometry course.

The problem becomes why he all of the sudden feels an affinity for his previous life, seemingly just by looking at Torah scrolls. It’s one thing to fake missing a gunshot because actually killing another person takes more mental preparation than you bargained for. It’s another to begin vandalizing a synagogue, only to stop in the middle of it because the Torah has been uncovered. These quick changes of behavioral pattern are rampant throughout the film, and hurt the overall quality of pain Danny is experiencing.

And, unfortunately, due to stodgy, soap opera-ish dialogue, the rest of the cast comes across as stick figures reading lines from a TelePrompTer. For all of the assumptive commentary spoken by Danny’s elders and leaders, not one of them holds an emotional link to their words that makes them believable. Maybe this is supposed to complement Danny’s rapid mood swings, but instead leaves each scene boringly predictable in terms of interaction and outcome.

The Believer is a good idea at its base. If Danny’s journey between despising and affirming his background had been better plotted, it could even be used to discuss religious questioning with those institutions that are always complaining about the apathy of the young, no matter what the denomination.

Jewish Hollywood’s War on God

Almost everyone realizes the Da Vinci Code is an unprecedented attack on Christianity and Jesus Christ. But most people don’t know that the media giants orchestrating this attack are Jewish.

Sony Corporation, the force behind the Da Vinci Code movie, is the eye of this Jewish promotional octopus. In the late 1980s, Sony of Japan bought out Metro Goldwyn Meyer, Columbia Pictures, and United Artists. Former president of Jewish-owned CBS, Howard Stringer (a Jew), became second in command of Sony International. He is chair and CEO of Sony of America. 1

Sony of America is dominated by Jewish names. Emily Susskind is president. Robert Wiesenthal is executive VP and chief financial officer; Nicole Seligman is executive VP and general counsel. Phil Weiser is CTO and senior VP. Michael Fidler Jr. is senior VP. Jay Samit is general manager of Connect. Gretchen Griswold is director of corporate communications. 2

Sony’s subsidiary, Columbia Pictures, maker of the Da Vinci Code movie, is headed by Amy Pascal, a Jew. She is also chairman of Sony’s Motion Picture Group. 3 The producer of the film is Brian Grazer, a Jew.

The screenplay was written by well-known, Jewish screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.

While originating with Sony, the Da Vinci Code’s promotion is a many-pronged attack on Christianity coming from the Jewish media community.

Sony worked closely with NBC in promotion of NBC/Universal’s anti-Christ Book of Daniel last winter. Now NBC, presided over by its Jewish head of television programming, Jeff Zukor, has lavishly promoted Sony’s Da Vinci Code movie on NBC. This past week, Today Show host Matt Lauer led the nation on a European “treasure hunt” in the steps of the Code. CBS, presided over by Jewish Sumner Redstone, and ABC, by Jewish Michael Eisner, have helped build a firestorm of public curiosity about the book and movie.

The largest Jewish publishing houses reap staggering profits from sales of Da Vinci Code books. Jewish Joel Klein is chairman of American operations of Bertelsmann A.G., the largest publishing conglomerate in the world. Random House, which the Encyclopedia Judaica confirms is Jewish-owned and controlled, is part of this consortium, benefiting by massive distribution advantages. 4 Random House owns rights to produce all large-print copies of the Da Vinci Code. As a division of Random House, Doubleday owns rights to produce all regular-print and special collector’s editions of the book. Finally, Anchor Books, another venerable Jewish publishing house and subsidiary of Random House completes this Jewish monopoly by printing all paperback copies.

Jewish-controlled magazines also hype the Code. Some 50 popular magazines, including Time, Life, and People, are owned by Time/Warner, with Jewish Norman Pearlstein, editor in chief. Newsweek, published by Jewish Donald Graham’s Washington Post, has featured recent conspicuous articles enticing millions to purchase the book or see the movie.

Articles too numerous to mention continue to emerge from Jewish-controlled newspapers. These include those owned by the Samuel Newhouse chain, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the New York Review of Books, the Village Voice, etc. All have been intensifying interest in the Da Vinci Code’s blasphemous message. The New York Times praised the book as “impeccably researched,” despite the Code’s outrageous claims, including that the Roman Catholic Church burned five million women at the stake. These media voices, which reflected so gravely on possible anti-Semitism in Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, have not a word of concern about the Code’s rabid anti-Christianity. That’s because they share it.

In a previous e-alert, I documented how Jews helped the National Geographic Society to bring the “Gospel of Judas” blasphemy to the attention of the world (See, “Judas: Historic Jewish Hero“). I revealed how NGS’ prestigious Codex advisory panel, the driving force behind promotion of this sacrilege, is top heavy with Jewish names.

Such fevered Christ-bashing continues a pattern of stepped-up attacks by Jewish activists over the past six months:

  • Last November, Abe Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, attacked politically involved Christian conservatives as a threat to freedom. He vilified the Southern Baptist Convention for allowing witnessing to Jews. In his recent book, Never Again? The Threat of the New Anti-Semitism, he accused Christians who witnessed to Jews of being anti-Semitic. The New Testament, he rails, is a lying, hateful, hurtful book, ultimately responsible for the deaths of 6 million Jews in World War II. (See, “ADL’s Foxman: New Testament is Anti-Semitic“)
  • Last December, in CBS’ 48 Hours special, “The Mystery of Christmas,” CBS dramatized the possibility that Christ was a bastard. (See, “More Christian Bashing from Media this Easter?“)
  • This winter, NBC’s Book of Daniel, authorized by Jeff Zukor, trashed Jesus and the Christian family. (See, “Who’s Behind NBC’s ‘Book of Daniel’?“)
  • Also this winter, Jewish activist Mikey Weinstein was successful in his suit against the Air Force Academy, banning chaplains there from using the name of Jesus in public prayers. He was assisted by Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff, highly placed ethical consultant to both the Navy and Air Force, in upholding such an end of free speech. (See, “Correction: Speech at Air Force Academy Not Free“)

One would think evangelical leaders, clearly under attack by Jewish activists in high places, would at least inform Christians of the identity of those who assail them and their Savior.

This is not the case. Evangelical and new-right leaders are silent concerning the Jewish origins of present attacks on free speech, Christian witnessing, the New Testament, and the integrity of Jesus Christ.

Why this incredible silence? Evangelicals won’t identify their attackers as Jewish because of a centuries-old superstition. They believe a divine curse will fall on any person or nation who criticizes Jews. The Biblical promise to Abraham, “I will bless those that bless thee and I will curse them that curse thee,” (Genesis 12:3) is taken to mean that no matter what evil or injustice Jews commit, Christians must only bless them, never criticize.

This is flatly contrary to Scripture.

The Bible teaches that godly reproof and warning are not curses but the greatest gifts that can be given to any sinner. Reproof brings with it the possibility of repentance, saving a soul from an eternity in hell!

It was with such a desire to bless Jews, that the Hebrew prophets, including Isaiah and John the Baptist, fiercely reproved the Jewish people and their leaders for sin. Does the Bible consider such fearless truth-telling to be anti-Semitic? Does it record terrible curses descending upon such prophets?

Quite the contrary, God’s curses did descend on those false prophets who flattered the Jews, exactly as do modern-day evangelicals. In the time of Elijah, compromising prophets cooed unconditional blessings on Ahab and Jezebel. Today Jerry Falwell, John Hagee, and Hal Lindsey lavish blessings on the vilest of Jewish sinners including arrogant, violent men like Shamir, Begin and Sharon.

Christ’s followers 2,000 years ago viewed His crucifixion from afar. They were impotent to restrain evil Jewish leaders who had Him killed. Today, evangelicals are paralyzed from really striking a blow against those who now publicly re-crucify the name and reputation of Jesus. Yes, they write letters and emails and perhaps boycott TV sponsors. Their intellectuals argue against the fallacies of the Da Vinci Code. But no one points a prophetic, bony finger at the Jewish media moguls, identifying their racial and religious origin. No one says like Nathan to the adulterous David, “You are the man!” (2 Sam. 12:7)

Incredibly as Jewish anti-Christ activism surrounds and overlays Christianity, the silence within the Church only becomes more deafening. About all that can be said then, is that when “Israel first” leaders and their flocks are at last herded into gulags to be slaughtered, few groups of people in history will have worked harder to ensure their own destruction.

Hollywood’s War on God

The Da Vinci Con: Hollywood’s War on God, is a mind-blowing, eye-popping documentary that reveals how satanic forces are using Hollywood’s most memorable movies and most popular actors to propagate an ancient lie in fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Learn how these movies are initiating the masses into a Gnostic worldview that will culminate in a “strong delusion” as the world joins Satan & the final Antichrist in their war on God.

Hollywood Insiders: Fallen Angels

Today’s minds are being programmed to accept a single world leader, and with Hollywood’s help, they will. In each film lies layers upon layers of occultism, synchronicities, conditioning, programming, desensitization, and symbolism. A repeating story is being told, one whose purpose could only serve the dark elite. By binding together seemingly unconnected Hollywood films, Fallen Angels reveals a nefarious plan to deceive the world into worshiping a mere man; and on the way, exposes writers and producers like Matt Groening ( The Simpsons ), George Lucas ( Starwars ),Joanne Rowling ( Harry Potter ) and Larry/Andy Wachowski ( The Matrix ) as Illuminati insiders. Other movies like Stargate, The Road to El dorado, and Dogma are also part of this repeating story. All of these movies share a common thread, and reveals a storyline every Illuminati member is familiar with.

Israel’s Drug Trade

Posted in Media Watch with tags , , , , on April 13, 2009 by The 800 Pound Gorilla

why_di29The Jewish Journal
April 8, 2009

In the late 1990s, Ecstasy was the favorite drug of the party crowd, and the Israeli mafia wasted little time staking its claim. Using strippers, elderly folks and Charedi teens as drug-running mules, a handful of Israeli ex-pats operated across Europe and the United States, and made a killing in the Ecstasy business.

Lisa Sweetingham, a former senior staff writer for, details this industry and the investigators who brought it down in her first book, “Chemical Cowboys,” published in February by Ballantine Books.

Jewish Journal: What turned you on to this story? Lisa Sweetingham: Back in 1999, there was a story in The New York Times that caught my interest. It was about these young, ultra-Orthodox teenagers getting caught at JFK Airport with Ecstasy pills wrapped up in socks in their suitcases. It was one after another.

JJ: What was their role? LS: There was a guy named Oded Tuito, the Fat Man. He was the kingpin. He would never have used Charedi, but there was a rogue dealer who worked for him for a while and then broke off and decided he wanted to make money. He moved to Amsterdam and set up his own network. He was smart and clever, and decided to go for broke. Sean Erez was his name. Sean Erez thought it would be really smart to use these ultra-Orthodox youth, because nobody would actually suspect these really pious-looking teenagers. Some of them really didn’t know what they were doing. They got a free trip to Europe and maybe $1,500 in cash and were told to take these suitcases back. I think most of them knew something was off, but Sean would tell them they were smuggling diamonds to the Holy Land.

JJ: How did drugs get from Israel to the streets of Los Angeles or a rave in Barstow or wherever?

LS: The drugs weren’t made in Israel; instead, they left it up to the Dutch chemists. There were these giant underground labs where the chemists would make the pills. An Israeli financier would put in $1 million, maybe a couple million. His point man in the Netherlands would walk into a bar and say I need 500,000 pills, and maybe he’d pay $1 a pill. Then those pills would be sold to another distributor for $5 or $6 per pill. Right there, you’ve already made $2.5 million. Then that person would have either Midwestern-looking folks who they hired to mule the pills over, or sometimes they used strippers — that was really popular — or sometimes they’d put them in container ships and hide them inside auto machinery or a shipment of Dutch tulips. And then you’d have the point man in the party triangle — New York, Miami and Los Angeles — and they would then sell those pills, which were now up to $6, for $13 a piece to their distributors, who could sell them for $20 to $50 in the nightclubs. Everybody takes a cut along the way. But you start out with a pill that costs about 25 cents to make and fetches up to $50.

JJ: ‘Chemical Cowboys’ opens with a hit in the San Fernando Valley. This was a turning point for the Ecstasy trade. LS: Up until that point, law enforcement in America considered Ecstasy kiddie dope. Nobody was following it. Nobody cared about it. Then when they found a dead body in the trunk of a Lexus in Brentwood and it was linked back to Ecstasy dealers, they began to see that these were real bad guys.

JJ: Just how did the Israeli mafia come to dominate the trafficking? LS: The yordim in America, who were involved in organized crime, had been pushing marijuana, cocaine, heroin, but they could never make the high-level profits that you could when you were at ground zero for production. That was all tied up with the Colombian and Mexican cartels, and you can’t muscle in on them. They saw that they could get in on the ground level on Ecstasy, that nobody was paying attention in law enforcement and that the demand outpaced the supply, so there was plenty of business for everybody to take a piece.

JJ: But a collaboration of American and Israeli police broke this ring, right? LS: Without it, American law enforcement would have never been able to take down the Ecstasy trade. In fact, it’s become a model.

JJ: And what was the L.A. connection in all this? LS: There were a lot of expats living in Encino, the Sherman Oaks area. These guys were essentially living really normal lives. Oded Tuito, here’s a guy who was on the president’s kingpin list, and for a while he was living in a cute little house in Woodland Hills. He was really a family man, but he also was commanding a multimillion-dollar Ecstasy business.

JJ: Eventually they caught up with him. LS: Yeah. But if not for the help of Israeli police and Spanish police, he would have never been caught.

JJ: What has happened since to the love drug? LS: Israeli organized crime has abandoned the trade. There is a case pending now: Itzhak Abergil is in Israeli custody now. It looks like he’ll be extradited before the end of the year to Los Angeles, where he faces federal charges on Ecstasy trafficking and murder. Most of the mafia bosses in Israel, I don’t see them getting involved with Ecstasy again. It’s too risky; there were too many high-profile arrests.

Israelis at center of ecstasy drug trade
Haaretz (Israel)

April 13, 2009

Israel is at the center of international trade in the drug ecstasy, according to a document published last week by the U.S. State Department.

In recent years, organized crime in Israel, some with links to criminal organizations in Russia, have come to control the distribution of the drug in Europe, according to a Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs document.

The same document also points out that Israeli criminal groups have a hand in the distribution of ecstasy in North America.

During 2000, 80 percent of the ecstasy seized in North America originated in the Netherlands, which is the largest production center, along with Belgium and Poland. The State Department is certain that Israeli organizations are linked to the laboratories in the Netherlands and are responsible for the worldwide distribution.

“Israeli drug distribution organizations are currently the main source for distribution of the drug to groups inside the U.S., to smuggling through express mail services, through couriers on commercial flights and, recently, through air cargo,” states the report. In the past two years, the U.S. has dealt more severely with ecstasy. Federal judges deal with smugglers in the ecstasy trade with the same severity as heroin and cocaine dealers

Israeli cyber-Spies Penetrated Electricity Grid in U.S. and blame it on China & Russia

going-off-the-grid-1-customElectricity Grid in U.S. Penetrated By Spies
The Wall Street Journal

APRIL 8, 2009

WASHINGTON — Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.

[SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) — More cyber attacks originate in the United States than in any other country, but the number of attacks that appear to come from Israel is nearly double that of any other nation, according to a study released Monday. (2002)

The study found that power and energy companies were primarily targeted by the Middle East {Israel} while high-tech and financial services companies were targeted by Asian attackers.

Israel, which has produced security software specialists such as Checkpoint and Kavado, produced more cyber attacks per head of population than any other nation, at 26 attacks per 10,000 internet users.

Sources inform Globes that representatives of the R&D department of Chinese communications equipment giant Huawei arrived in Israel this week to examine the possibility of establishing an R&D center in Israel. (2004)]

The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven’t sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war.

“The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid,” said a senior intelligence official. “So have the Russians.”

The espionage appeared pervasive across the U.S. and doesn’t target a particular company or region, said a former Department of Homeland Security official. “There are intrusions, and they are growing,” the former official said, referring to electrical systems. “There were a lot last year.”

Many of the intrusions were detected not by the companies in charge of the infrastructure but by U.S. intelligence agencies, officials said. Intelligence officials worry about cyber attackers taking control of electrical facilities, a nuclear power plant or financial networks via the Internet.

Authorities investigating the intrusions have found software tools left behind that could be used to destroy infrastructure components, the senior intelligence official said. He added, “If we go to war with them, they will try to turn them on.”

Officials said water, sewage and other infrastructure systems also were at risk.

“Over the past several years, we have seen cyberattacks against critical infrastructures abroad, and many of our own infrastructures are as vulnerable as their foreign counterparts,” Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair recently told lawmakers. “A number of nations, including Russia and China, can disrupt elements of the U.S. information infrastructure.”

Officials cautioned that the motivation of the cyberspies wasn’t well understood, and they don’t see an immediate danger. China, for example, has little incentive to disrupt the U.S. economy because it relies on American consumers and holds U.S. government debt.

But protecting the electrical grid and other infrastructure is a key part of the Obama administration’s cybersecurity review, which is to be completed next week. Under the Bush administration, Congress approved $17 billion in secret funds to protect government networks, according to people familiar with the budget. The Obama administration is weighing whether to expand the program to address vulnerabilities in private computer networks, which would cost billions of dollars more. A senior Pentagon official said Tuesday the Pentagon has spent $100 million in the past six months repairing cyber damage.

Overseas examples show the potential havoc. In 2000, a disgruntled employee rigged a computerized control system at a water-treatment plant in Australia, releasing more than 200,000 gallons of sewage into parks, rivers and the grounds of a Hyatt hotel.

Last year, a senior Central Intelligence Agency official, Tom Donahue, told a meeting of utility company representatives in New Orleans that a cyberattack had taken out power equipment in multiple regions outside the U.S. The outage was followed with extortion demands, he said.

The U.S. electrical grid comprises three separate electric networks, covering the East, the West and Texas. Each includes many thousands of miles of transmission lines, power plants and substations. The flow of power is controlled by local utilities or regional transmission organizations. The growing reliance of utilities on Internet-based communication has increased the vulnerability of control systems to spies and hackers, according to government reports.

The sophistication of the U.S. intrusions — which extend beyond electric to other key infrastructure systems — suggests that China and Russia are mainly responsible, according to intelligence officials and cybersecurity specialists. While terrorist groups could develop the ability to penetrate U.S. infrastructure, they don’t appear to have yet mounted attacks, these officials say.

It is nearly impossible to know whether or not an attack is government-sponsored because of the difficulty in tracking true identities in cyberspace. U.S. officials said investigators have followed electronic trails of stolen data to China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese officials have denied any wrongdoing. “These are pure speculations,” said Yevgeniy Khorishko, a spokesman at the Russian Embassy. “Russia has nothing to do with the cyberattacks on the U.S. infrastructure, or on any infrastructure in any other country in the world.”

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Wang Baodong, said the Chinese government “resolutely oppose[s] any crime, including hacking, that destroys the Internet or computer network” and has laws barring the practice. China was ready to cooperate with other countries to counter such attacks, he said, and added that “some people overseas with Cold War mentality are indulged in fabricating the sheer lies of the so-called cyberspies in China.”

Utilities are reluctant to speak about the dangers. “Much of what we’ve done, we can’t talk about,” said Ray Dotter, a spokesman at PJM Interconnection LLC, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states and the District of Columbia. He said the organization has beefed up its security, in conformance with federal standards.

In January 2008, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved new protection measures that required improvements in the security of computer servers and better plans for handling attacks.

Last week, Senate Democrats introduced a proposal that would require all critical infrastructure companies to meet new cybersecurity standards and grant the president emergency powers over control of the grid systems and other infrastructure.

Specialists at the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a nonprofit research institute, said attack programs search for openings in a network, much as a thief tests locks on doors. Once inside, these programs and their human controllers can acquire the same access and powers as a systems administrator. NERC Letter

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation on Tuesday warned its members that not all of them appear to be adhering to cybersecuirty requirements. Read the letter.

The White House review of cybersecurity programs is studying ways to shield the electrical grid from such attacks, said James Lewis, who directed a study for the Center for Strategic and International Studies and has met with White House reviewers.

The reliability of the grid is ultimately the responsibility of the North American Electric Reliability Corp., an independent standards-setting organization overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The NERC set standards last year requiring companies to designate “critical cyber assets.” Companies, for example, must check the backgrounds of employees and install firewalls to separate administrative networks from those that control electricity flow. The group will begin auditing compliance in July. —Rebecca Smith contributed to this article.

Study: Most cyber attacks originate in U.S., Israel

USA Today
January 28, 2002

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) — More cyber attacks originate in the United States than in any other country, but the number of attacks that appear to come from Israel is nearly double that of any other nation, according to a study released Monday.

High-tech, financial services, media/entertainment and power and energy companies showed the highest intensity of attacks per company, each averaging more than 700 attacks per company over the six-month period.

On a percentage basis, most of the attacks were relatively benign in nature. But the number of severe attacks was still substantial, with critical and emergency-level events detected on 43% of the client networks, the study found.

“In fact, our findings strongly suggest that once companies connect their systems to the Internet, they are virtually guaranteed to suffer some form of attack,” the report said.

Average attacks per company increased by nearly 80% over the six months studied.

Israel leads the list of countries in terms of number of computer attacks per 10,000 Internet users, followed by Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, France, Turkey, Malaysia, Poland, Taiwan and Denmark, according to the study from Riptech, a firm that provides security monitoring of corporate and other computer networks.

“Israel is a country with pretty sophisticated warfare capabilities,” that spread through the relatively computer-literate general population, said Amit Yoran, president and chief executive of Alexandria, Va.-based Riptech.

For the study, Riptech investigated more than 128,000 cyber attacks found in the analysis of 5.5 billion log entries and alerts on its customer’s networks between July and December. The company has about 300 customers in 25 countries.

While most attacks can be traced back to what is believed to be the source country, it is possible for malicious hackers to hide their exact location, according to Yoran.

The study found that attacks that appeared to originate in the United States — nearly 30% of the total — were nearly triple the second-ranked country. But only about 3.5 attacks were made per 10,000 U.S. Internet users, compared with 26 attacks per 10,000 Internet users in Israel, the study found.

Behind the United States in percentage of total attacks was South Korea, China, Germany, France, Canada, Taiwan, Italy, Great Britain and Japan.

Middle East targets power; Asia targets finance

The study found that power and energy companies were primarily targeted by the Middle East while high-tech and financial services companies were targeted by Asian attackers.

Of particular note was the fact that the Code Red and Nimda worms were so predominant — accounting for about 63% of the malicious activity detected by Riptech — that they were excluded from the study.

“We had to pull them out or they would have completely skewed any type of analysis,” said Yoran. “They were just so prevalent over that six month period.”

Excluding Nimda, attacks dipped during the week following Sept. 11 but began to rise in the third week of September, peaking in the middle of November and declining slightly in early December, according to the study.

Companies with more than 500 employees suffered at least 50% more attacks than smaller companies, while public companies suffered about twice as many attacks as private and non-profit companies.

Thirty-nine percent of the attacks looked targeted, appearing to be deliberate attempts to compromise a specific system or company. “That was just mindboggling to me,” Yoran said.

Yoran said the study was different from most in that it relied on actual attack data rather than surveys of network administrators or other company officials, which Yoran said are not always accurate.

China”s Huawei mulling Israel R&D center
Asia Intelligence Wire

October 27, 2004

Sources inform Globes that representatives of the R&D department of Chinese communications equipment giant Huawei arrived in Israel this week to examine the possibility of establishing an R&D center in Israel.

The visit follows Minister of Industry Trade and Labor Ehud Olmert”s visit to China in June. Olmert was accompanied by a business delegation, which met Huawei chief manager Zhang Laifa. Olmert invited Zhang to establish an R&D center in Israel and to attend the Telecom Israel 2004 exhibition in November.

Amiram Halevy-Laher, director of the Asia Pacific division at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor foreign trade administration, confirmed the report. He said the visit by Huawei R&D representatives and the expected visit by Zhang next month were initial steps for examining the possible establishment of a Huawei R&D center in Israel.

A delegation of Israel high-tech businesspeople and Israeli Industry Center for R&D (MATIMOP) representatives recently visited Shezhen in China, where it established relations with Huawei”s R&D department. Following the meeting in Shenzhen, Huawei”s R&D staff will also meet MATIMOP representatives in Israel.

Spy chiefs fear Chinese cyber attack
Times Online

March 29, 2009

INTELLIGENCE chiefs have warned that China may have gained the capability to shut down Britain by crippling its telecoms and utilities.

They have told ministers of their fears that equipment installed by Huawei, the Chinese telecoms giant, in BT’s new communications network could be used to halt critical services such as power, food and water supplies.

The warnings coincide with growing cyberwarfare attacks on Britain by foreign governments, particularly Russia and China.

A confidential document circulating in Whitehall says that while BT has taken steps to reduce the risk of attacks by hackers or organised crime, “we believe that the mitigating measures are not effective against deliberate attack by China”.

It is understood that Alex Allan, chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC), briefed members of the ministerial committee on national security about the threat from China at a top-secret Whitehall meeting in January.

According to Whitehall sources, the meeting, led by Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, heard that ministers had “not paid sufficient attention to the threat in the past”, despite repeated warnings from the intelligence services. These included warnings from the security arm of GCHQ, which expressed concern because government departments, the intelligence services and the military will all use the new BT network.

A Whitehall report is understood to warn that, although there is at present a “low” risk of China exploiting its capability, “the impact would be very high”.

Huawei was allegedly founded with significant funding from the Chinese state. Its head is Ren Zhengfei, a former director of the telecoms research arm of the 3m-strong People’s Liberation Army.

The company is providing key components for BT’s new £10 billion network, which will update the UK’s telecoms with the use of internet technology. The report says the potential threat from Huawei “has been demonstrated elsewhere in the world”.

The multi-million-pound deal, signed in 2005, has led to a string of risk warnings from the intelligence and security services, with officials complaining of the failure of ministers to take them seriously.

It is unclear whether Patricia Hewitt, then trade and industry secretary, was warned of the problems when the deal was agreed in April 2005. However, the British company Marconi, which failed to win the contract in the face of a far cheaper offer from Huawei, did ask her to intervene to protect British jobs.

Hewitt, now a nonexecutive director of BT, declined to intervene, saying it was “a competitive tender between two commercial companies”. The most recent warnings about the cyberthreat to Britain’s security came in the JIC report on UK cybersecurity circulated in January and a Cabinet Office briefing paper that is understood to have emphasised Huawei’s links to the Chinese military.

Despite Allan’s warnings, and repeated warnings in the past, ministers remain reluctant to fund any move to remove the threat, officials say.

Yvette Cooper, chief secretary to the Treasury, is understood to have cautioned that it would be difficult to find the necessary funds in the current downturn. Ministers expressed concern that replacing the Chinese components with British parts would clash with government policy on competition.

According to the sources, the ministerial committee on national security was told at theJanuary meeting that Huawei components that form key parts of BT’s new network might already contain malicious elements waiting to be activated by China.

Working through Huawei, China was already equipped to make “covert modifications” or to “compromise equipment in ways that are very hard to detect” and that might later “remotely disrupt or even permanently disable the network”, the meeting was told.

This would be likely to have a “significant impact on critical services” such as power and water supplies, food distribution, the financial system and transport, which were dependent on computers to operate.

While technical modifications suggested to BT reduced the threat from hackers, organised criminals and most “hostile adversaries”, they were “not effective against deliberate attack from China”. The current friendly relations between Britain and China meant there was no immediate threat of this happening but there was still a very real threat that “covert functionality” within the components was already being used to gather intelligence.

Intelligence chiefs are believed to have warned that it was impossible to say if such information-gathering had already been introduced, since they had “only limited understanding of our adversaries’ attack capability”.

Whitehall departments were reportedly targeted by the Chinese in 2007, and a few months later Jonathan Evans, the MI5 director-general, wrote to 300 chief executives warning them that the Chinese were hacking into their systems and stealing confidential information.

An attempt by Huawei to merge with the US company 3Com, which provides computer security systems for thePentagon, was blocked last year after US intelligence warned that it would not be in US national security interests. In a new-year e-mail, Sun Yafang, Huawei’s chairwoman, told the company’s 85,000 employees that the global economic situation offered “both challenges and opportunities”. Four weeks later she was inside Downing Street as Gordon Brown welcomed Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier.

Both Wen and Sun were keen to promote Huawei, which in little more than 20 years has grown into one of the world’s most powerful companies, with projected sales this year of £21 billion. Last year its sales jumped 46%. Its tentacles have reached most of the world’s telecoms companies.

Four days before Brown met Sun, intelligence chiefs had warned ministers of fears that Huawei’s role in the new system might have given China the ability to shut down Britain. Nor was it the first warning. Members of the ministerial committee on national security were told that “ministers had not paid sufficient attention to the threat from Huawei”.

John Tindle, professor in telecommunications engineering at Sunderland University, said software or hardware could sit hidden in a network, waiting to be activated. “If an unauthorised person were able to gain control of the equipment, its mode of operation could be changed,” he said. “The ability to move traffic across the network could be switched off. Traffic could be re-routed to another node controlled by the attacker.”

Huawei was selected to provide key components for the BT network in April 2005 despite allegations that it was bank-rolled by the Chinese government. The firm has previously shown itself to be opportunistic. The US company Cisco, one of Huawei’s main rivals, sued the Chinese company for alleged theft of its intellectual property rights in 2003. The case was settled out of court.

It is Huawei’s links to the Chinese military that cause most concern. Ren set up the company in 1988 after an edict from Deng Xiaoping, then China’s leader, that the country’s defence industry turn itself into profitable companies able to acquire modern technology.

A Pentagon report last week cited Huawei as a key part of the cyberthreat from China, noting that it retained “close ties” with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Huawei denies any continuing links to the PLA. A spokeswoman at the company’s UK headquarters dismissed the alleged links as “rumour and speculation”.

Companies target overload cyber-attacks
Israel 21c

December 03, 2001

Tel Aviv-based WanWall is preparing to commercially launch the first comprehensive solution for what is potentially the most dangerous weapon in the arsenals of cyber-terrorists – the massive distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks that flood a victim’s Internet server with huge amounts of traffic, overloading the system and causing the site to essentially crash.

In February 2000 such attacks crippled the networks of Yahoo, Ebay and, knocking these e-commerce giants offline for as long as several days, resulting in an estimated $1.2 billion in losses. More recently – and much more ominously – similar attacks have were used to paralyze NATO computers in protest against the bombing of Serbia, and key Indian government Web sites to promote Kashmiri separatist goals.

While attacks against commercial Web sites may seem like a mere nuisance, in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the DDOS threat has government officials concerned. A Pentagon advisory commission on terrorist threats faced by the U.S. said in recent report that the nation “must improve security against cyber attacks and enhance related critical infrastructure protection to ensure the security of essential government, financial, energy, and other critical sector operations against attack.”

The FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center, which on Nov. 2 issued a formal warning about the likelihood of new DDOS attacks, said in an October report that, “cyber protesters are becoming increasingly more organized and their techniques more sophisticated.”

The threat is so real that the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon’s technology development organization, has solicited companies to present their technologies at a December conference devoted solely to the threat of, and potential solutions to, DDOS attacks.

Companies and government institutions currently rely on a hodgepodge of anti-virus software, firewalls and other Internet security devices to respond to DDOS attacks. That’s about to change, though, as WanWall readies its suite of products that are designed specifically to protect routers and application servers from extreme overload conditions in wide-area networks (WANs).

In addition to government agencies, the products are targeted at Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Web-hosting companies, large enterprises and cellular telephone providers. Taken together, these represent an extremely attractive market opportunity for WanWall and other companies developing anti-DDOS solutions. According to a recent study by technology research firm IDC, the total DDOS prevention market will grow to over $800 million by 2005.

“We are ready with the right product just as the need for it increases significantly,” WanWall CEO Yuval Rachmilevitz said of the heightened awareness of the cyber-terrorist threat.

WanWall’s products are unique in that they divert the “bad” traffic away from a victim’s network while allowing legitimate traffic to reach the site. In addition, the key components of the system are not part of the network’s “critical path” and therefore do not degrade the normal operation of the network. Rather, when an attack is detected, the system automatically offloads the victim’s traffic from the network, cleans it, and then returns the clean traffic to the network, on its way to the intended destination.

For example, an attack on one ISP client has no impact on any others. In addition, WanWall’s solution is the only one capable of protecting ISPs’ and carriers’ networks from all known attacks, with minimal requirements from the network.

“The key idea of the system is not to add another device on the path, but rather to divert attack traffic away from it,” said Rachmilevitz.

The company, which was founded in 2000 by a team of top computer scientists from the Israeli academia and executives from some of Israel’s top technology companies, has significant backing from major venture capital firms, including Intel Capital and Israel’s Gemini Capital and Koor CVC. With these heavyweights in its corner, WanWall has the financial resources to see itself through and beyond the March 2002 release of its first products, and its first anticipated revenues.

Brooklyn assemblyman (and orthodox Jew) downplays Talmudic molestation claims

croglin_vampire_cHikind retreating on tough tactics against molesters
The Jewish Daily Forward

March 26, 2009

Assemblyman Dov Hikind of Brooklyn, a leading voice in the fight to end child sexual abuse in Orthodox communities, is backing down from some of his previous claims and backing away from one of his most confrontational stands against an alleged p-d-phile.

[While not stated in the article, it should be noted that Hikind himself is an Orthodox Jew — 800]

In an interview with the Forward, Hikind dramatically scaled down a previously reported estimate of the number of abuse cases he knew about. He also said he could not keep a pledge to force a prominent yeshiva to remove an alleged p-d-phile from its staff.

Hikind said that he adjusted his tactics in order to be most effective. “Some people want me to yell and scream; they want me to burn the town down. I know how to do that, but I would lose the war immediately,” Hikind said in his office in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Boro Park.

After Hikind first publicized the problem of child sexual abuse in religious communities on his weekly radio show, it was widely reported that he heard from 1,000 victims of past and current abuse. That figure was attributed to Hikind by The New York Times, the New York Post, the Forward and other Jewish media. [Note how the Forward openly refers to both the NY Times and the NY Post as “Jewish media” — 800]

But the real figure is about 100, Hikind told the Forward. He said the often repeated 1,000 number may have come from his speculation about the possible number of cases, given what he has heard from therapists who treat sexual abuse victims.

“I think what we were saying to everybody was, my God, the numbers must be astronomical,” Hikind said. “We never said a thousand. It keeps on getting repeated; anybody who talks to me, I actually tell them what the facts are.”

In the same interview, Hikind retreated from his previous position with regard to one of the Orthodox community’s most prominent alleged abusers — Rabbi Avrohom Reichman, formerly principal of, and currently a teacher at, the United Talmudical Academy, located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Reichman, the UTA and the Satmar Bungalow Colony summer camp are all named as defendants in a lawsuit filed by Joel Engelman, 23, who says that he was sexually abused by Reichman when he was 8 years old and that the school covered up the abuse.

Since Engelman went public with his allegations, both his family and Hikind have heard from others who say they were also victimized by Reichman. Last summer, following those revelations, Hikind vowed publicly that Reichman would not return to his teaching job in the fall of 2008.

But the accused rabbi is still teaching, and Hikind has not publicly pressed the issue further. The assemblyman told the Forward that his confrontation with Satmar leaders has been “a rather huge learning experience for me.” [One has to wonder what exactly Hikind “learned” to make him change his tune so completely — 800]

Hikind stated that he has “been extremely clear publicly that I believe Rabbi Reichman has done some terrible things, and he should be out. We tried a lot of things behind the scenes to get [Satmar leaders and school officials] to remove this guy, but at the end of the day, for whatever reason — and I think it has something to do with his family being very prominent and having a lot of money — they were not going to remove this guy willingly. Period. End of story.”

The UTA did not return a phone message seeking a response to the allegations.

Hikind said that he could have raised more of a ruckus — for example, by protesting in front of the school — but he believed that such tactics would ultimately hurt the cause by turning other Orthodox leaders against him, which in turn would discourage other victims from speaking out.

“I made a decision that for me to go to war with Satmar, war meaning going into the streets and fighting them publicly and protesting outside the school… it would just destroy everything I’m trying to do,” Hikind said. “I felt without doubt that I would jeopardize everything else that I’m doing. I’ve had to walk on eggs.”

Pearl Engelman, Joel’s mother, has lashed out at Hikind in the past. But at a recent public forum on child sexual abuse, she seemed more sad than angry with Hikind — though still furious at her son’s alleged molester. “The school is stronger than Dov Hikind,” she said quietly. She said people often ask her why Reichman is still teaching children.

“Honestly, I have no answer, and it needs to be asked of the community and the school that is harboring him,” she said, adding that many UTA parents don’t even know about the abuse allegations, despite widespread publicity. “Our community is so secluded that people actually don’t know the news.”

While he has been trying to work cooperatively with religious leaders, Hikind said he is supplying the district attorney’s office with the names of accused molesters. He steadfastly refuses to disclose the names of victims or to publicly name accused p-d-philes, but he said giving information about suspected molesters to the authorities is something different altogether.

“We have always worked with the DA,” Hikind said. “We don’t go out and publicize it, because that would destroy everything that I’m doing. But when we have situations where there’s a danger, we constantly give that information to the proper authorities.”

He would not disclose the number of names he has passed along to the district attorney, saying only that it was “many, many, many.” The Brooklyn district attorney’s office confirmed that Hikind has been sharing information, but the office declined to specify how many names the assemblyman has passed along. Overall, the D.A. now has 19 open cases involving allegations of sexual abuse in Orthodox communities in Brooklyn, said Jonah Bruno, a spokesman for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes.

Advocates for abuse survivors say they understand that Hikind has to tread cautiously, and they appreciate his efforts.

“The fact that 100 victims came forward is significant. Think about how hard it is for a survivor to come forward in the face of the stigma in their communities. These people are really courageous,” said Lonnie Soury, who is a spokesman for Survivors for Justice, a group of Jewish sexual abuse survivors.

Elliot Pasik, the attorney handling Engelman’s lawsuit, confirmed that Hikind has been communicating with law enforcement.

“People need to recognize that the sex abuse problem has been brewing in the Orthodox community for 30 years, and an overnight solution is simply not feasible,” said Pasik, president of the Jewish Board of Advocates for Children, a group he founded last year. “I understand there are advocates clamoring for Mr. Hikind to publicly release the names of the alleged molesters, but we shouldn’t pursue vigilantism…. There is a validity to the path Mr. Hikind has pursued.”

In addition to civil lawsuits and criminal investigations, the third front in the fight against sex abuse is unfolding in Albany, where lawmakers are considering two bills that could permanently change the way religious communities deal with sexual abuse.

One would require background checks and fingerprinting for all private school employees — something that is already mandated for public schools. Sponsored by Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg and co-sponsored by Hikind, among others, the fingerprinting bill is awaiting a hearing in the Assembly education committee.

The second bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey and also co-sponsored by Hikind, would extend the statute of limitations by five years for criminal and civil cases of child sex abuse and would create a one-year window during which people could sue over old cases of sexual abuse. That bill, which would expose churches, religious schools and synagogues to possible litigation from abuses stretching back many years, may get a vote in the Assembly in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, survivors of sexual abuse say they will continue to speak out, and Hikind says he will continue advocating on their behalf — in his own way.

U.S. envoy writes of Israeli threats
The Nation (U.S.)

March 31, 2009

In the wake of the accusation by Chas Freeman that his nomination to lead the National Intelligence Council was derailed by an “Israeli lobby,” [LINK] a forthcoming memoir by another distinguished ambassador adds stunning new charges to the debate.

The ambassador, John Gunther Dean, writes that over the years he not only came under pressure from pro-Israeli groups and officials in Washington but also was the target of an Israeli-inspired assassination attempt in 1980 in Lebanon, where he had opened links to the Palestine Liberation Organization.

[Thanks to DBS at The French Connection for this one]

Dean’s suspicions that Israeli agents may have also been involved in the mysterious plane crash in 1988 that killed Pakistan’s president, General Mohammed Zia ul Haq, led finally to a decision in Washington to declare him mentally unfit, which forced his resignation from the foreign service after a thirty-year career. After he left public service, he was rehabilitated by the State Department, given a distinguished service medal and eventually encouraged to write his memoirs. Now 82, Dean sees the subsequent positive attention he has received as proof that the insanity charge (he calls it Stalinist) was phony, a supposition later confirmed by a former head of the department’s medical service.

Dean, whose memoir is titled “Danger Zones: A Diplomat’s Fight for America’s Interests,” was American ambassador in Lebanon in August 1980 when a three-car convoy carrying him and his family was attacked near Beirut.

“I was the target of an assassination attempt by terrorists using automatic rifles and antitank weapons that had been made in the United States and shipped to Israel,” he wrote. “Weapons financed and given by the United States to Israel were used in an attempt to kill an American diplomat!” After the event, conspiracy theories abounded in the Middle East about who could have planned the attack, and why. Lebanon was a dangerously factionalized country.

The State Department investigated, Dean said, but he was never told what the conclusion was. He wrote that he “worked the telephone for three weeks” and met only official silence in Washington. By then Dean had learned from weapons experts in the United States and Lebanon that the guns and ammunition used in the attack had been given by Israelis to a Christian militia allied with them.

“I know as surely as I know anything that Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, was somehow involved in the attack,” Dean wrote, describing how he had been under sharp criticism from Israeli politicians and media for his contacts with Palestinians. “Undoubtedly using a proxy, our ally Israel had tried to kill me.”

Dean’s memoir, to be published in May for the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Memoir Series by New Academia Publishing under its Vellum imprint, has been read and approved for publication by the State Department with only very minor changes, none affecting Dean’s major points. Its underlying theme is that American diplomacy should be pursued in American interests, not those of another country, however friendly. A Jew whose family fled the Holocaust, Dean resented what he saw as an assumption, including by some in Congress, that he would promote Israel’s interests in his ambassadorial work.

Dean, a fluent French speaker who began his long diplomatic career opening American missions in newly independent West African nations in the early 1960s, served later in Vietnam (where he described himself as a “loyal dissenter”) and was ambassador in Cambodia (where he carried out the American flag as the Khmer Rouge advanced), Denmark, Lebanon, Thailand (where Chas Freeman was his deputy) and India. He takes credit for averting bloodshed in Laos in the 1970s by negotiating a coalition government shared by communist and noncommunist parties.

He was sometimes a disputatious diplomat not afraid to contradict superiors, and he often took — and still holds — contrarian views. He always believed, for example, that the United States should have attempted to negotiate with the Khmer Rouge rather than let the country be overrun by their brutal horror.

As ambassador in India in the 1980s he supported then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s policy of seeking some kind of neutral coalition in Afghanistan that would keep the American- and Pakistani-armed mujahedeen from establishing a fundamentalist Islamic state. For several years after the Soviet withdrawal, India continued to back Najibullah, a thuggish communist security chief whom the retreating Soviet troops left behind. After the mujahedeen moved toward Kabul, Najibullah refused a United Nations offer of safe passage to India. He was slaughtered and left hanging on a lamppost.

It was in the midst of this Soviet endgame in Afghanistan that Dean fell afoul of the State Department for the last time. After the death of General Zia in August 1988, in a plane crash that also killed the American ambassador in Pakistan, Arnold Raphel, Dean was told in New Delhi by high-ranking officials that Mossad was a possible instigator of the accident, in which the plane’s pilot and co-pilot were apparently disabled or otherwise lost control. There was also some suspicion that elements of India’s Research and Analysis Wing, its equivalent of the CIA, may have played a part. India and Israel were alarmed by Pakistan’s work on a nuclear weapon–the “Islamic bomb.”

Dean was so concerned about these reports, and the attempt by the State Department to block a full FBI investigation of the crash in Pakistan, that he decided to return to Washington for direct consultations. Instead of the meetings he was promised, he was told his service in India was over. He was sent into virtual house arrest in Switzerland at a home belonging to the family of his French wife, Martine Duphenieux. Six weeks later, he was allowed to return to New Delhi to pack his belongings and return to Washington, where he resigned.

Suddenly his health record was cleared and his security clearance restored. He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award and received a warm letter of praise from Secretary of State George Shultz. “Years later,” he wrote in his memoir, “I learned who had ordered the bogus diagnosis of mental incapacity against me. It was the same man who had so effusively praised me once I was gone — George Shultz.”

Asked in a telephone conversation last week from his home in Paris why Shultz had done this to him, Dean would say only, “He was forced to.”
