Israelis told to fight ‘holy war’ in Gaza

Many Israeli troops had the sense of fighting a “religious war” against Gentiles during the 22-day offensive in Gaza, according to a soldier who has highlighted the martial role of military rabbis during the operation.

The
soldier testified that the “clear” message of literature distributed to
troops by the rabbinate was: “We are the Jewish people, we came to this
land by a miracle, God brought us back to this land and now we need to fight to expel the Gentiles who are interfering with our conquest of this holy land.”

The claim comes in the detailed transcript of a post-war
discussion by soldiers, publication of which has triggered a military
police inquiry into allegations about the use of lethal firepower
against unarmed civilians.

The investigation was ordered by the military’s advocate
general Avichai Mandleblit on Thursday after the liberal daily
newspaper Haaretz published extracts from the transcript describing
incidents in which Palestinian civilians were killed and property
wantonly damaged.

In the fuller version of the transcript published yesterday, the soldier, a unit commander from the Givati brigade, says: “This
was the main message and the whole sense many soldiers had in this
operation was of a religious war.” He recalled that his own sergeant
was from a hesder yeshiva, a college combining religious study and
military service, who led the whole platoon in prayer before going into
battle. [Battle?! The Israelis deployed armored tank columns, backed by
jet fighters and helicopter gun-ships, against lightly-armed resistance
fighters. What happened in Gaza was more akin to a sacrifice, or
holocaust, than a “battle” — 800]
. The commander added that he had
sought to talk to the men about Palestinian politics and society and,
“about how not everyone in Gaza is Hamas and not every inhabitant wants
to vanquish us”.

After the offensive, Yesh Din, an Israeli human rights group, called for the dismissal of the military’s head chaplain, Rabbi Avichai Rontzki, a brigadier general. It said that he had distributed to troops a booklet saying that it was “terribly immoral” to show mercy to a “cruel enemy” and that the soldiers were fighting “murderers”.

involving graduates from the Yitzhak Rabin military preparatory course.
At one point Danny Zamir, the head of the course, says he would have
questioned the killing of 180 traffic policemen during bombing on the
first day of the operation. One pilot replies: “Tactically speaking you
call them police. In any case they are armed and belong to Hamas …
during better times they take Fatah people and throw them off the roofs
and see what happens.”

The latest casualty figures published by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights list the names of 1,434 dead of whom they say 926 were civilians, 236 fighters and 255 police officers.

As a university student in the early 1990s, I fantasized about a Jewish metal band. Not a metal band with Jewish members (there have been plenty of those) but a metal band that drew on Jewish symbols and took delight in their transgression, just as other metal bands twisted and subverted Christian symbolism. My friend Saul (a guitarist) and me (a bassist) formed an imaginary band, Death Matzo, who would celebrate the murder of Christian children to provide blood to make unleavened bread. The idea remained a fantasy not just due to the fact that we couldn’t find a drummer who shared it, but also because the idea was so silly, unlikely and offensive that it was better it stayed within our fertile imaginations.

Yet, in the last few years, my fantasy of Jewish metal has been realised. In Israel, bands like Orphaned Land, Desert, Amaseffer and Arallu have explored Jewish musical and lyrical themes in novel and interesting ways. Elsewhere, Jewish metal is rarer and more underground but if you look hard you find strange projects like the Lubavitch black metal of Schneerson (I kid you not) and the dodgy “Ju Metal” shtick of David Lazzar (The ‘Rocking Rabbi’). Now though, a newly released Jewish metal CD bears the unprecedented imprimatur of the cutting edge of the musical and Jewish world – Black Shabbis, by Jamie Saft.

Jamie Saft Black Shabbis is released by John Zorn’s Tzadik label. It was only a matter of time before the label put out a CD like this. Zorn himself has flirted with extreme metal on his Painkiller project (which featured ex-Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris) and some of his Electric Masada work with Marc Ribot explores the outer limits of guitar noise music. Saft himself is the kind of prolific polymath that the downtown NY Jewish music scene adores, responsible for a host of film music, jazz and way-out -there recordings with a bewildering array of collaborators. In this respect, Black Shabbis is not the product of a metal band rooted in the metal scene, but of a one-off project that sets out to explore a particular aesthetic. Most of the music is played by Saft himself, with a small group of guest artists on some of the tracks (including Mr Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn).

Saft has clearly been thinking along the lines that I was when I fantasised about Death Matzo – except of course he has the ability and seriousness to see it through. The vocabulary of metal is rooted in a fascination with the dark side, with western Christian civilization’s rich and lurid imaginations of evil.Yet the dyad Christ – Satan that is repeatedly explored and transgressed in metal culture (and particularly in black (Satanic) metal) is constructed without reference to the deep-rooted association of Jews with the devil. Jews rarely appear in the metal mythos and when they do it is in the marginal National Socialist black metal scene, whose proponents ironically associate Jews with Christianity. So there is a rich vein of symbolism and mythology that awaits any Jewish metal musician brave enough to mine it.

The cover of Black Shabbis makes the association of Jews with diabolism explicit: a winged goat-headed man with burning red eyes sports a star of David on his forehead. The 9 tracks delve into the dark side of Jewish history. The CD has no lyrics sheet and in any case some of the songs don’t have words, however the inlay sleeve does print a short paragraph describing the themes and sources of inspiration for the songs. I was immediately drawn to the track ‘Blood’, which unlike Death Matzo does not celebrate but condemns the blood libel as a ‘hideous caricature’.

Most of the album’s other tracks are explained by particular facets of anti-Semitic libels and incidents including: ‘Der Judenstein’ (a blood libel by the Grimm brothers), ‘Kielce’ (a post-war massacre of Polish Jews) and ‘The Ballad of Leo Frank’ (victim of an early twentieth century lynching in the American south). This is not the playful ‘*censored* you’ that would satirise anti-Semitism by reclaiming its most outrageous accusations that I dreamt of many years ago, and of course the CD is all the better for it. Unlike my puerile vision of Jewish metal, Saft’s is a serious exploration of the possibilities that metal music may provide for dramatising and exploring the horror of the anti-Semitism that is deep-rooted in western constructions of ‘the Jew’.

Jamie Saft, is a genius at wielding and manipulating the musical tools available in the metal armoury. Contrary to the stereotype of metal as a stock of banal clichés played by morons, metal has diversified enormously in the last three decades, creating a sophisticated and complex panoply of sounds and possibilities. Saft shows no loyalty to any one style and the tracks skip radically between influences and sub-genres: The aforementioned ‘Blood’ has a Slayer-type vibe; ‘Army Girl’ is a twisted metallic rhythm and blues with its constantly repeated line ‘you’re making me crazy’ unsettling the mix; ‘Kielce’ is a disturbingly anarchic mix of free-form drums, guitar noise and black metal screams. Saft’s metal is not the metal of Motley Crüe (not that there’s anything wrong with Motley Crüe) but the ‘hipster metal’ that has in the past few years drawn critics to reconsider this previously revised genre and praise radical metal artists like Sunn 0))), Nadja and Mastodon. In short, Black Shabbis is hipster metal for hipster Jews.

What Saft does not do though is to integrate Jewish music sources into the mix. True, opener ‘Black Shabbis – The Trail of Libels’ is a strange surf guitar piece whose Dick Dale associations vaguely recall Jewish and Middle Eastern music sources, but that’s about as far as it goes for ‘ethnic’. Not that that’s a problem, but it would be intriguing to hear Saft or another Tzadik artist metallically mutate klezmer or some other Jewish sound. For now though, Black Shabbis will provide unnerving delights for anyone like me who is as obsessed with the possibilities of the distorted guitar as they are with possibilities of Jewish identity.

Despite the Israeli obsession with having “the perfect baby”, studies show a fear of birth defects is not the leading cause for abortion in Israel.

Over 50% of terminated pregnancies are a result of out-of-wedlock conception, incest or conception under illegal circumstances (such as rape, statutory rape), a Health Ministry report published on Tuesday stated.
The rate of abortions prompted by fetal defects remained steady since the mid 1990s, and between the years 2000 to 2007 a 4% drop in the number of women terminating pregnancies for this reason has been recorded.

The report covered 19,500 cases of abortion that took place in Israel in 2007. Data showed that 55% of abortions were a result of incest, illegal relations or out-of-wedlock conception.

A health risk to the mother and physical defects to the fetus were equally significant reasons for abortion, with each constituting the grounds for 18% of pregnancy terminations.

The mother’s age, either below 17 or above 40, was a factor in less than a tenth of abortions in 2007.

Over half of the abortions (58%) were performed in the period up to the seventh week of pregnancy. A third took place between the eighth and twelfth week, and a tenth of terminations were carried out past the thirteenth week of pregnancy, after the first trimester had ended.

40% of abortions performed in private hospitals Termination of more advanced pregnancies was rare in 2007, with 245 abortions after the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy being approved, making up about 1% of all abortions.

Forty percent of abortions were performed in private medical centers. Only 10 abortions took place in private ultra-Orthodox hospitals in 2007, due to defects that endangered the fetus or the mother.

About one quarter of pregnancy terminations in Israel were performed using the “abortion pill” Mifepristone, taken in the early stages of pregnancy, up to week seven.

In 2007, 20,900 women appealed to pregnancy termination committees in hospitals throughout Israel, and 19,544 requests for abortion were granted.

Last year’s overall abortion rate was the lowest in Israel since the early 1990s, and the Israeli abortion rate is, after Greece, the lowest of all European Union nations, with a rate of 133.8 for every thousand births, compared to the EU’s average of 246 per 1,000 births.

What a medieval “anti-Semitic myth” has in common with HBO’s vampire series

All of a sudden, and quite out of the blue, life expectancy has lengthened — to forever. Vampires are everywhere again, from the high-haired matinee idols driving tween box office in the form of Twilight — a film written by a Mormon who thinks the beautiful are the damned, and forbidden love can wait — to the HBO series True Blood, which tries to reconcile a fabled genus of social outcasts with a very real one. In executive producer Alan Ball’s rendering, vampires are like gays (some of them even are gay), who have “come out of the coffin” to declare themselves your friendly neighborhood nightstalkers, thanks to a synthetic Japanese-manufactured blood cocktail that sustains them in lieu of the warm, vein-delivered stuff. It’s a clever political trope, even if flagrantly pilfered from the X-Men series. Though who among us would argue with Anna Paquin’s ability to finally get laid?

Any talk of glowering immortals stomping the earth in a state of High Romantic sturm und drang always puts me in mind of a different allegory — that of the Wandering Jew. Perhaps you’re familiar with this apocalyptic, anti-Semitic myth, which tells of a Jewish shopkeeper who, upon seeing cross-carrying Christ pause on his way to Golgotha, mocks the rebel rebbe: “Go on quicker, Jesus! Go on quicker! Why dost Thou loiter?” For his insolence, the merchant is admonished by Christ: “I shall stand and rest, but thou shalt go on till the last day,” an incantation that condemns him to an eternity on earth. The inspiration for this fable of Hebraiophobic comeuppance derives from vague mutterings in the Gospel of Matthew as to the presence of those who “shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”

Sightings of the Wanderer throughout history have been said to presage the End Times, and so naturally sightings have been scattered and frequent. In the lead-up to the last millennium, and in reply to the chiliastic rumblings emanating from the ranks of fundamentalist Protestantism, Free Inquiry’s Martin Gardner wrote a well-researched essay about this subject, explaining that, as the clock ticked closer toward 2000, “it would not surprise me to see a picture of the Wandering Jew on the front page of one of the supermarket tabloids.” Eat your heart out, Bat Boy.

There are plenty of variations on the Wanderer theme, beginning with one explaining that Joseph of Aramethea was the death-thwarting wraith, whose real name was Cartaphilus. Aramethea, said to be one of the last persons to see Christ alive, was rumored to be tromping around Europe by the 13th century when an Armenian archbishop relayed his sorry tale to Roger of Wendover, who duly recorded it in Flores Historiarum.

Since then, the Wandering Jew has come into continental vogue cyclically, usually at times of cultural and political crisis. Eugene Sue French’s serialized novel Le Juif Erant (1844-1845) came out in Paris just in time for revolution, and well within the actuarial windows of future eyewitnesses to Alfred Dreyfus’s notorious unpleasantness. In England, George Macdonald’s Thomas Wingfold, Curate (1876) envisioned the Wanderer as an Anglican minister overcome with grief about the Crucifixion and clearly in the wrong line of work since he could not pass a cross without wanting to mount and hug it until he collapsed to the ground unconscious. Wingfold finds true love, only to then agonize over the object’s impending demise. They both try to off themselves by self-immolation in an active volcano-it works for her, but not for him. Nevertheless, Jesus returns to pardon his erstwhile catcaller and carries Wingfold off to heaven to be reunited with his girl in what may be the Book of Revelation’s sole answer to the happy ending.

Elsewhere in literature the image or palimpsest of the Wanderer has been “reclaimed” to self-aggrandizing effect, anticipating today’s sexy cool of angsty or amoral immortals. Benjamin Disraeli, England’s first and only Jewish prime minister, was equally assailed and envied in his time as a sinister “magician,” the Tory arriviste whose outsize ambition resulted in his owning the exclusive attention of one the most influential monarchs in history. Disraeli winkingly satirized himself-not to say his popular reputation-in the fictional character of Sidonia, a beside-the-scenes power broker who appears in three of the parliamentarian’s late novels: Sybil, Tancred, and Coningsby, in which he plays a major role. As Adam Kirsch points out in his recent, brilliant biography of Disraeli, Sidonia is the uncanny archetype for every post-Protocols “international Jewish mastermind.” He physically mirrors his creator in Iberian pallor, with an “impressive brow, and dark eyes of great intelligence.” Despite having the ear of every European diplomat, a bank account capable of rescuing gross national products (a task that often falls to him), and a sexual demeanor to parody Orientalist stereotype, Sidonia is afflicted with an acute disorder: “He might have discovered that perpetual spring of happiness in the sensibility of the heart. But this was a sealed fountain to Sidonia. In his organization there was a peculiarity, perhaps a great deficiency. He was a man without affections.” From Dracula to Barnabas Collins, vampires have warned their swooning prey not to get too attached….

“I am the Wandering Jew,” says George Eliot’s Herr Klesmer in her proto-Zionist novel Daniel Deronda (1876),

“flashing a smile at Miss Arrowpoint, and suddenly making a mysterious, wind-like rush backward and forward on the piano. Mr. Bult felt this buffoonery rather offensive and Polish, but — Miss Arrowpoint being there — did not like to move away.”

The difficulty of moving away is also, according to Wandering Jew legend, moored to an involuntary response: The unkillable shopkeeper is possessed of an irresistible charisma and glamour, just like True Blood’s Bill and Twilight’s Edward Cullen, who informs the unafraid new-girl-in-town Bella, “everything about me is designed to draw you in.” Here one recalls that Byron, one of the earliest international celebrities who made seduction and sport-*censored*ing seem Hegelian, served as the template for John Polidori’s foundational short story, The Vampyre. And Byron’s close friend and fellow radical poet was Shelley, who from a young, atheistic age grasped the abuses of enchantment, which he described with chilling precision in his first epic poem, helpfully titled The Wandering Jew (1810).

The future husband of the author of Frankenstein gave a sense of lyric tragedy to the medieval blood libel, naming his undead pale riding antihero Paulo, who bears the mark of a cross burned into his forehead and suffers from fitful bouts of depression. Shelley’s Wanderer is also the survivor of multiple attempts at suicide (lightning, volcano, cliffs) and when we first encounter him, he’s standing in a church watching a vestal virgin named Rosa offered up for sacrifice. He rescues her, falls for her, and, in the confines of his haunted castle, confesses his perfidious origins to her. Anne Rice might have easily given these strophes over to her Louis, the homoerotic Young Werther from Interview with the Vampire. A Cajun plantation owner in the late 18th century, Louis loses his family, then pines for death, whereupon he’s met and “turned” by the witty but conscienceless vampire Lestat, who’ll soon realize what a whiner he’s awarded limitless breath. Louis embodies the spirit of his age by being at odds with everything about it, and, rather like Paulo,

“pierce[s] with intellectual eye,
Into each hidden mystery;
I penetrate the fertile womb
Of nature; I produce to light
The secrets of the teeming earth,
And give air’s unseen embryos birth:
The past, the present, and to come,
Float in review before my sight…”

Sookie in True Blood can read people’s thoughts and glimpse the future-except when it comes to Bill. Though when she drinks his blood after being beaten within inches of her life, her senses grow keener. She eats her grandmother’s old-recipe sausage, saying she can taste the farm on which the pig was raised, even the soil that grew the herbs upon which it fed. What is this but penetrating the fertile womb of nature?

True Blood has its fun lampooning bigotry and the cant of civil rights movements. While it may not intentionally echo the Wandering Jew myth, the series is hardly immune from unintentionally trafficking in familiar anti-Semitic clichés. Vampires in this hyperrealistic drama seek entry into mainstream society and publicly refute all manner of paranoid fantasies humans have concocted about them. A comely blonde representative of the American Vampire League (Abe Foxman meets Ann Coulter) regularly holds forth on television against sulfurous Christian preachers who’ll not directly address the spawn of Satan, thank you very much, as well as jaded liberal skeptics such as Bill Maher. “We’re just like you!” she keeps saying, and it’s certainly true that vampires have a collective identity crisis. They have complicated and divisive takes on the issue of conversion and mixed relationships. They also have to compete with other ethnic and racial minorities for inclusion. A moralizing satirist would leave things right there, except that True Blood goes a provocative step further: All the paranoid fantasies vampires deny about themselves also happen to be true.

Despite their public relations claims to the contrary, vampires do continue to feast on humans (probably the creepiest anti-Semitic parallel of all is that they profess to enjoy infants’ blood the most). They do congregate in shadow-bathed “councils” overseen by “magisters” who uphold an archaic vampire law and hand down punishments for transgressors, all to ensure the tribal compliance to a timeless international conspiracy. They influence politicians and the media, and very probably led us into war in Iraq as a personal favor to Transylvanian hardliners.

It’d be ludicrous to suggest there was any underhanded motive on the part of the unambiguously progressive producers of True Blood. (When American Beauty won the Oscar for Best Screenwriting, Alan Ball made a double entendre of the term “acceptance speech,” and everything in his career and disposition makes good on that avowal.) But HBO’s blockbuster series about fangbangers in the bayou shows that camp postmodernism has a dangerous unintended consequence of draining the poison out of antique and pernicious cultural myths. And that kind of sucks.

Jewish Professor outrages Jews with book claim in Italy

A Jewish academic has shocked Italy by claiming Jews murdered Christians for their blood in the Middle Ages so it could be used in rituals.
The details were revealed in the Italian newspaper, the Corriere della Sera, which published extracts of the book, Easter of Blood by Professor Ariel Toaff.
The claims were denied by leading Jewish figures including his father Elio, once the chief Rabbi of Rome.
In the book, Prof Toaff alleges the ritual killing was carried out by members of a fundamentalist group in reaction to the persecution of Jews.

The book describes the mutilation and crucifixion of a two-year-old boy to recreate Christ’s execution at Pesach, the Jewish Easter. The festival marks the fleeing of the Jews from Egypt and Prof Toaff says Christian blood was used for “magic and therapeutic practices”.

In some cases the blood was mixed with dough to make azzimo (Mozza), unleavened bread, eaten at Pesach. He says the acts took place in around the city of Trento in modern northern Italy, between the 11th and 14th centuries.

Prof Toaff based his book on confessions he says came from Jews captured and tried for the practice. He said several were executed after confessing to the crucifixion of Christian children.

Italy’s senior rabbis, including Elio Toaff, issued a joint statement condemning the book. “There has never existed in Jewish tradition any permission or custom for using human blood for ritual purposes. Such a practice is considered with horror.

“It is absolutely improper to use centuries old statements, extracted under torture, to formulate singular and aberrant historical theses. The only blood shed in these stories is that of many innocent Jews.”

Prof Toaff, who teaches mediaeval and Renaissance history at Bar Ilan University in Jerusalem, said the reaction was a “disgrace” as they had not read the book, which has yet to be published.

He emphasised the practice was confined to “a small group of fundamentalists.”

He added that attacking the whole of Judaism would be similar to blaming Islam for the acts of extremist Muslims. “They had suffered from the trauma of mass suicides. [sic] It was both a kind of revenge and a way, for them, of seeking redemption.”

Professor Ariel Toaff teaches at the Bar Illan University near Tel Aviv, a Jewish academic who has cause a fuss by writing a book stating that over a four hundred year period, Jews murdered Christians during the Middle Ages so that their blood could be used in rituals.

Last night his claims were denied by other Jews including his father Elio, a former chief rabbi in Rome.

Israel Shamir denies Israeli orchestration of 911 and only responds to left gatekeepers when rebutting any evidence topics or so called truth seekers. he says “There is always a place for critique and argument — even against Chomsky, and I have had my go at that, too. However, there are some red lines we should try to observe in friendly critique, and this one was a crude ad hominem and paranoid attack. Barrett is similar to the holocaust-obsessed Jews (and their ‘denying’ counterparts) who need your confirmation of their narrative and do not let go of your buttonhole until you respond. Asians count their dead of Vietnam War, Cambodia bombings, Laos CIA operations in millions. Even a pro-American, Russian TV broadcaster could not refrain from saying, ‘now Americans begin to understand the feelings of Baghdad and Belgrade’.

The Riders could be anybody who lost his house to the bank, who was squeezed from his work and made permanently unemployed, who was declared an Untermench by the new Herrenvolk. They could be Russians, Malaysians, Mexicans, Indonesians, Pakistanis, Congolese, Brazilians, Vietnamese, as their economy was destroyed by Wall Street and the Pentagon. They could be anybody, and they are everybody. Their identity is quite irrelevant as their message is more important than their personalities, and their message is read loud and clear in the choice of targets.”
I guess Mr. Shamir is just another left-gatekeeper with very enticing subject discussed such as blood libel, but will not address the 800 Pound Gorilla in the Room of Israeli orchestration and cover-up of 911.
